Always great accumulators of diverse people and spaces, cities now face challenges that pull their populations, and their leaders in many directions. The polycentric city represents a novel amalgam of the benefits of density and the propensity of human settlement towards entropy. How can planners address these seemingly oppositional imperatives? Three senior representatives from the design profession and academia provide their interpretation of how to manage growth and maintain the vitality of the near future’s polycentric cities.
